Faculty Researchers and Extensionists of Capiz State University engaged in a thorough and challenging task in creating a top-quality science news story during the Research Journalism Writeshop last August 26 and 27.

The event was conducted by the Research, Development and Extension office and was facilitated by CAPSU’s Publication and IM Director, Dr. Hazel D. Joaquin, and the CAPSU Public Information office.

The guest speaker from the University of the Philippines Visayas, Dr. Zoilo Sarmiento Andrada Jr., dedicated his time and efforts to critiquing and refining the writeups of the participants.

He discussed the elements, characteristics, and structures of Science Journalism. He also gave a series of tips, tricks, and guides in order for the participants to be able to create better writeups.

The participants of the campuses and satellite colleges were given the chance to draft their science news stories using the researches that were published within the university.

One by one, Dr. Andrada guided the participants into polishing their own work to the smallest of details, which in turn, was a mind-opening opportunity for all of the participants.

“We will be implementing a second phase for this Journalism Writeshop,” Dr. Joaquin said. The application phase will now be slowly implemented within the university through the creation of a dedicated magazine for the featured researches.

Dr. Joaquin also considered the possibility of letting the undergraduate students engage in their own science feature magazines. This way, they will have the means to feature the excellent researches of the college students of CAPSU.
